Telkwa Air Quality

2018 Wood Stove Exchange Program

The Bulkley Valley – Lakes District Airshed Management Society and the Village of Telkwa have partnered on a new air quality monitoring station. The “Purple Air” air monitor will be located at the intersection of Hwy 16 and Hankin Avenue high on the front of the Village Office.

This air monitor is an inexpensive, high-quality particulate air pollution monitor which detects particulate matter (PM 2.5).PM 2.5 refers to tiny particles in the air that are two and one-half microns or less in width. There are about 25, 000 microns in an inch with the width of the larger particles in the PM 2.5 size range being about thirty times smaller than that of the human hair. The now decommissioned air monitor previously at Birch Street and Coalmine Rd have shown some of the highest PM 2.5 readings in BC on an annual average basis. Numerous scientific studies have shown serious adverse health risks when long-term exposure to PM 2.5 occurs.

Even though this monitor is not of regulatory quality, the monitor will deliver “real-time” data available for all residents to review online at

The Airshed Management Society operates a service at where residents can sign up for email or text notifications for Air Quality and Smoke Advisory Notices.
