Join us for ShakeOut
Thursday, October 21, 2021 at 10:21 a.m. the staff at the Village Office will be hiding under their desks. That is because we are participating in the Great British Columbia ShakeOut, the world's largest earthquake drill.
While potential earthquake hazards depend on your location, everywhere in British Columbia is considered at high risk in relation to the rest of Canada. For example, on January 26, 1700, a magnitude 9 earthquake (similar to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake off the coast of Japan) shook the entire province as well as Washington, Oregon, and California, and generated a massive tsunami.
The Great British Columbia ShakeOut is an annual opportunity to practice how to be safer during big earthquakes: "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." To help our community prepare and become more resilient in an earthquake, we encourage you to register with ShakeOut and participate with us.
How the Village of Telkwa is Participating:
At 10:21 a.m. all Village of Telkwa staff in the office and the field will be encouraged to Drop, Cover, and Hold On. Immediately after the earthquake drill, office staff will be completing an evacuation drill. All staff and any members of the public present in the building will be escorted outside to our muster point for a head count and a quick debrief session.
Why is the Village of Telkwa Participating?
While the earthquake risk in the Bulkley Valley is fairly low compared to the coast, the risk is still there. Participating in ShakeOut brings awareness to emergency preparedness and ensures that we know how to respond, no matter where we are, if an earthquake occurs.
