NEWS RELEASE: Pickleball Clinic in Telkwa
The Bulkley Valley Pickleball Club (the Club) and Village of Telkwa invite community members to attend a pickleball introductory workshop on June 26, 2021 at the Joseph F. Dockrill Memorial Rink (Dockrill Rink) in Telkwa.
Pickleball, which has become one of the fastest growing sports in North America, is a racquet sport that combines the elements of badminton, table tennis and tennis.
The Club painted two pickleball courts on the Dockrill Rink in May this year, and the courts are already being well utilized. The Village of Telkwa is happy to have an additional, outdoor recreational activity in our community and has purchased two pickleball nets for members of the Club to use.
Members of the community are encouraged to join the Club and Canadian Pickleball Association online (https://pickleballcanada.org/), for a total cost of $25 per person per annum (excluding venue rental fees for indoor winter play). The advantage of joining the club is: 1) support for a local sports club, 2) the Canadian Pickleball membership covers insurance while participating in the sport, and 3) Club members have access to the Village’s pickleball nets. The Club is happy to assist seniors or individuals, who have difficulty using online programs, to sign up as Club members.
Based on the Provincial COVID Restart Plan, Club volunteers will run a free introductory pickleball workshop at Dockrill Rink on Saturday, June 26 (weather dependent) from 10:00 am until 11:30 am. Anyone 15 or older who is new to the game, or has minimal experience and would like to learn the game, can register by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. Community members are welcome to sign up as a pair or as a family if you have four members 15 years and older. Paddles, nets and balls will be provided for this introductory workshop. Please register early as this first introductory workshop will be limited to 16 people. For additional information and updates on the introductory workshop, please visit Bulkley Valley Pickleball’s website or Facebook page.
COVID guidelines relating to outdoor sport and spectators will be followed. If you would like to watch the introductory workshop on June 26th, please be cognisant of the number of people present and adhere to COVID restrictions of a maximum of 50 spectators.
The Club may run another introductory workshop in the summer if there is enough interest from community members, or run smaller sessions pending Club volunteer availability. Community members may also try the sport first by contacting the Club for a free introductory session run by the Club’s volunteers. The Club has paddles and balls that anyone can use for the introductory session before purchasing their own for future play.
The Village of Telkwa Council and staff would like to thank the Club’s volunteers for their enthusiasm and commitment by hosting the pickleball introductory workshop on June 6th.
