RDBN Reinstates Cardboard Ban at Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station for ICI Cardboard
Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako Reinstates Cardboard Ban at the Knockholt Landfill and Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station for ICI Cardboard Effective December 6, 2020.
The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN) is reinstating the Old Corrugated Cardboard (OCC) ban for industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) cardboard at the Knockholt Landfill and Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station effective December 6, 2020. There will be no changes to the continued acceptance of residential cardboard under the Recycle BC Program at the Recycling Depot also located at the Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station.
Since the receiving facility in Smithers was destroyed in a fire in May 2019, Knockholt Landfill and Smithers/Telkwa Transfer Station have been receiving and landfilling ICI cardboard from the western portion of the RDBN. Due to capacity issues at the Knockholt Landfill, the RDBN can no longer justify accepting the extra volumes, and will not be able to accommodate OCC disposal after December 5, 2020. A new baling facility is being considered in the Smithers Area with a proposed operational commencement date in early 2021.
In the interim, waste haulers will be asked to divert any OCC to a receiving facility for recycling located in a neighbouring jurisdiction until such time as the bailing facility is operational. The RDBN is working to find a solution for self haulers. Some potential solutions are: contacting a waste hauler who currently handles OCC, and/or, short-term stock pilling of material while waiting for a facility to be operational. As circumstances continue to evolve, please contact the RDBN for solutions that may become available.
The Regional District continues to advocate along with the Town of Smithers and Village of Telkwa to find a solution to reinstate curbside recycling programs to both municipalities.
