Business Retention and Expansion Program

The Business Retention and Expansion Program (BRE) is an on-going program based on the provincial guideline to ascertain the health of existing businesses in the community and help build stronger ties with businesses by assessing their needs.

Because a community’s existing businesses are major contributors to the local community, the program is designed to help existing establishments stay and grow in the community by working hand-in-hand with local businesses to identify risks, examine barriers to business growth, assess and address needs using an evidence-based solution approach.

Examples of Telkwa’s BRE program include:

  • Introduce local businesses to resources, support networks, government assistance programs and potential investors.

  • Engagement with local businesses through annual business walks, on-site visits and conversations.

  • Develop collaborative relationships for participating in long-term retention and expansion activities.

  • Provide better information and understanding for local leaders to identify and address the strengths and weaknesses of the local business climate.

  • Promote revitalization of the Village’s downtown area, for example, the business façade improvement program, funding by Northern Development Initiative Trust.

  • Promote shop local programs, including Love Telkwa, ShopLocalBC.

  • Provide a resource for new businesses and entrepreneurs.
