FIRESMART REBATE PROGRAM

WHAT IS THE FIRESMART REBATE PROGRAM?

The Village of Telkwa’s FireSmart Program is offering a Residential FireSmart Rebate to support residents to carry out voluntary on-property mitigation activities. To be eligible the property must be located within the municipal boundary of the Village of Telkwa and have a current FireSmart Home Assessment completed by the Village.

The FireSmart Rebate is available on a first come first serve basis pending funding availability. Participating residents can apply to receive a rebate for the completion of one Priority Project per calendar year. Rebates are limited to 50% of the total cost to complete a Priority Project identified in a current FireSmart Home Assessment to an annual maximum of $2,000 per property. Rebates will not be issued retroactively. The maximum rebate amounts provided below reflect the importance of each of the Home Ignition Zone’s priority zones to structure survivability.

Applications will be accepted between April 15th and December 1st, 2026 pending funding availability.

THE REBATE PROCESS

STEP 1: SIGN-UP FOR A FIRESMART HOME ASSESSMENT

The first step to participate in the Residential FireSmart Rebate program is to have the Village’s Wildfire Mitigation Specialist complete a FireSmart Home Assessment on your home and property. After you have signed up the Village’s FireSmart Coordinator will be in touch to schedule an assessment.

STEP 2: REVIEW YOUR FIRESMART HOME ASSESSMENT REPORT

You should receive your FireSmart Home Assessment Report within a week of the Wildfire Mitigation Specialist visiting your property. The report will provide a summary of potential wildfire vulnerabilities to your home and property as well as identify Priority Projects eligible for a Residential FireSmart Rebate.

STEP 3: IDENTIFY YOUR PRIORITY PROJECT

After you have reviewed your FireSmart Home Assessment Report choose one of the Priority Projects outlined in the General Comments section of the Report that you wish to complete. If you need help with this decision or would like to propose a different project, contact the Fire Smart Coordinator for assistance and/or approval.

FireSmart Canada™ has developed the Wildfire-Resilience best-practice checklist for home construction, renovation and landscaping. In combination with your FireSmart Home Assessment Report, this guide can assist you and/or a qualified contractor to plan your project and to select the appropriate products/materials required to complete your project.

STEP 4: PROVIDE QUOTATIONS OR WORK HOUR ESTIMATES

Once you have chosen a project it is time to collect quotes and/or estimates from qualified contractors and submit them to the FireSmart Coordinator for review and approval. Ensure that the quotations and/or estimates clearly differentiate between material and labor costs. If you wish to complete all or a portion of a project yourself, your time is considered to be an in-kind contribution and will be calculated at a pre-determined hourly rate. For your time to be eligible a Work Hour Estimate Form must be completed by the FireSmart Coordinator before you start the project.

STEP 5: COMPLETE THE PROJECT

After the FireSmart Coordinator has reviewed and approved the quotations, estimates, and/or work hour estimates you may begin work on the project.

STEP 6: COMPILE RECORDS AND REPORTING INFORMATION

Once the project has been completed you will need to compile your receipts and records of payment and submit them to the FireSmart Coordinator for review. You will also need to request a follow-up inspection to confirm the work has been completed to an appropriate standard.

STEP 7: RECEIVE YOUR REBATE

After the FireSmart Coordinator has completed a follow-up inspection and has completed a review of the required reporting information a cheque will be issued by the Village of Telkwa and delivered via Mail.
