- Fire Prevention Week
This week is #FirePreventionWeek. Telkwa Fire Rescue has launched the "You're One Smart Cookie" program to recognize children in the community who demonstrate examples of both fire and personal safety. Children are invited to demonstrate their knowledge and show the Village office staff or Telkwa Fire Rescue how to test a smoke alarm, or show they wear a helmet when cycling, or a PFD when on the water. Free cookie vouchers available for safety smart children - while stocks last.
- Foster Family Month
October is about celebrating and honouring caregivers and foster families that have stepped up to help children and youth who are experiencing hardship. The role foster families play in the lives of young people, and the contribution they make to their communities is vital to helping children and youth reach their full potential. The impact that they have on the young people in their care will last a lifetime, from stepping up to become a mentor, advocate, and friend, to providing a nurturing and safe home, and responding to each unique situation with love and support. On behalf of the Village of Telkwa Council and staff, thank you to the caregivers and foster families for your contribution and dedication.

- Active Transportation Network Plan
The Village of Telkwa has been working towards improving human powered transportation opportunities, such as biking and walking, by completing an Active Transportation Network Plan (ATNP). We now have a draft plan we'd like your feedback on. The feedback collected in this survey will help the Village of Telkwa prioritize the active transportation network, infrastructure improvements and shape the final list of recommendations in the ATNP. - National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, September 30th
Council and staff acknowledge that it is an honour to work, live, and play on the traditional territory of the Gitdumden Clan of the Wet’suwet’en people. September 30th is Canada’s National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In honour of this occasion, the Village of Telkwa has been flying the 'Every Child Matters' flag in place of the 'Telkwa' flag, and an orange ribbon has been hung on Village of Telkwa vehicles. To show our support, orange t-shirts were worn by Council and staff in the office and the field. We encourage you to commemorate the history and ongoing trauma caused by residential schools and to honour those who were lost and the survivors, families, and communities who continue to grieve. September 30th is a federal statutory holiday and the Village of Telkwa office will be closed in honour and recognition.

- Pile Burning Projects in Bulkley Valley
The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) will be conducting pile burning in five locations in the Bulkley Fire Zone over the coming month. Smoke from this burn may be visible from the Village of Telkwa, the Town of Smithers and the surrounding areas, including Highway 16. The projects are scheduled to start as early as September 26, 2022 and may happen as late as October 28, 2022. Projects include: Driftwood Road area: BCWS will be supporting the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure with firefighting personnel to burn four piles of wood debris. The piles are located at the Driftwood gravel pit, near to the Driftwood Provincial Park. Call Lake Provincial Park: BCWS will burn two hand built piles of wood debris as part of a multi-year FireSmart project in the area. Chapman Road: BCWS will burn multiple hand built piles as part of an ongoing fuels management project. Old Babine Lake Road: BCWS will burn several hand built piles near Ganokwa Creek created from weather station clearing. Twin Falls Recreation Site: BCWS will be supporting Recreation Sites and Trails BC with firefighting personnel to burn several hand built piles from clearing at the Twin Falls Recreation Site. The Village of Telkwa office will be closed on Monday, September 19, 2022 to observe the National Day of Mourning in recognition of the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II.

Please be advised of the following alert for all transit systems: National Day of Mourning - Regular Transit Service While the Government of Canada and Province of BC are recognizing Monday, September 19, 2022 as a day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II on the date of her state funeral, BC Transit will operate a standard transit service on Monday in all transit systems across the province.
